Get motivated to design and build better buildings – and inspired to create a high-performance YOU!

Laying the Groundwork: Why Catching Up is Crucial for Getting Ahead

You have to catch up before you can get ahead.

I’m not a mathematician, but I understand you must be effective at algebra before succeeding at calculus. Learning and executing more complicated tasks is difficult when you haven’t mastered the prerequisites.

As the requirements and targets for building performance continue to grow more complex, the need to understand and master the fundamentals becomes more critical.

AEC Collaboration

The bar for architectural excellence is continuously being raised. The expectations on architects continue to mount from both external and internal pressures. A quick visit to the American Institute of Architects website and you quickly learn that design excellence now means saving the world.

The AIA says that architectural design needs to be sustainable, resilient, inclusive, diverse, zero-carbon, equitable, healthy, ethical, and regenerative. No pressure, Architects – just simple old transformative design to save society!

But here’s the kicker: tucked away in this grand manifesto is the simple truth that buildings must work. Period.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s important to understand our impact and how to improve every day. However, understanding and executing the basics is critical to reach those goals. Otherwise, it’s like trying to excel in calculus without knowing algebra.

The Building Enclosure Can Save the World!

Now, let’s talk about the powerhouse of potential – the building enclosure. The building enclosure isn’t just another aspect of design; it’s the cornerstone in achieving many of the AIA’s lofty goals. It’s time for every architectural firm to rally their technical architects, those wizards of wisdom, to embrace the challenge and lead the charge in fundamental building enclosure design.

These technical architects (project architects, job captains, etc.) must be able to “do the algebra.” They must be able to design and document building enclosure fundamentals.

Complex projects with innovative design, high-performance materials and methods, and high-performance requirements will likely require building enclosure expertise from outside consultants. These enhanced requirements and conditions are “the calculus.”

However, when the basics become a stumbling block, and we get stuck in endless revisions, the building enclosure consultant and the architect waste time fixing what should have been right from the get-go.

It is further complicated when several building enclosure consultants are involved with the project. “Bad details” become open discussion items. Suddenly, you’ve got a circus on your hands, with more opinions than a political debate and endless Zoom meetings that could bore a statue.

It is time for technically-minded architects who desire a real, lasting impact on a building’s design and performance to jump to the rescue!

Passion for Flashin’

Not every architect is a Design Architect. Most architects will realize they don’t like design as a job, are not incredibly skilled at design, or work at a studio where they are the 7th best designer. Many architects also learn that they can embrace a technical understanding of how things go together. They learn to focus on the technical requirements of achieving the Design Architect’s vision.

So here is my battle cry to all architectural firms: let’s support the growth of technically oriented staff into building enclosures and building science training. Help them develop a passion for flashin’!

The efficiency gains in schedule and resources – shifting from belaboring basic detailing to spending more time thinking about the essential complexities of the project’s building enclosure – will result in lower risk and better projects.

Maybe even projects that help save the world.

Self-Architecture

Embarking on a journey of self-improvement is more than just a noble pursuit—it’s a necessity for those of us aiming to tap into the depths of our potential and make a mark on the world. The essence of refining ourselves, diving into the lessons we’ve overlooked, and tackling the inevitable challenges isn’t just about hitting milestones. It’s about the profound journey of transformation and the person we become.

Why Self-Refinement is Non-Negotiable

Think of self-refinement as the art of sculpting your existence. It’s about chiseling away at the aspects of ourselves holding us back and polishing those that propel us forward. In an era of rapid change, stagnation is equivalent to regression. Opting out of self-refinement means sidelining your potential and the boundless opportunities waiting to be seized. As we refine, we don’t just better navigate life’s complexities; we amplify our impact on everything we touch.

Lifelong Learning: The Unending Classroom

Every moment, every encounter is ripe with insights waiting to be unearthed. Yet, in the hustle of daily life, it’s easy to miss these golden nuggets of wisdom. Revisiting these overlooked lessons isn’t about fixating on what’s behind us; it’s about arming ourselves for the future. It’s about patching the cracks in our knowledge and skills, rendering us more formidable against whatever challenges come our way. Often, you have to catch up before you can get ahead.

The Crucible of Challenges

The road to our aspirations is rarely straightforward. It’s littered with hurdles that test our mettle, patience and resolve. Yet, it’s these very challenges that are the catalysts for growth. Stepping into the unknown and facing our fears isn’t just about overcoming what’s in front of us; it’s about conquering the doubts within us. Every hurdle surmounted is a declaration of our strength and a building block for more extraordinary achievements.

A Triad of Growth: Refinement, Learning, Challenges

Merging the continuous refinement of self, the eagerness to learn from every scenario, and the courage to embrace challenges creates a powerful growth engine. This dynamic interplay cultivates resilience, adaptability, and a mindset geared towards expansion, invaluable traits in the fast-paced world we navigate.

Strategies for the Journey

Define Your North Star: Clarity in your goals sets the stage for a meaningful journey. The beacon guides your efforts and keeps you aligned with your vision.

Adopt a Growth Mindset: Foster the belief in your ability to evolve. A growth mindset transforms challenges into stepping stones for development.

Welcome Feedback, Embrace Reflection: Regular feedback and introspection are essential. They shine a light on areas for growth and help you savor your journey’s milestones. Self-awareness is a superpower.

Commit to Lifelong Learning: Carve out time for acquiring new skills and deepening your knowledge. Staying in a state of perpetual learning keeps you agile and informed.

Venture Beyond Comfort: True growth sprouts at the edge of comfort. Challenge yourself to take on tasks that stretch and test your limits.

Build Resilience: Nurture the ability to withstand and bounce back from setbacks. Each obstacle is a lesson in disguise, priming you for stronger comebacks.

Conclusion

In essence, the path of self-improvement is not merely a personal endeavor; it’s a contribution to the collective. As we evolve, learn, and tackle life’s hurdles, we don’t just elevate our existence; we become beacons of inspiration for others. Let’s pledge to this journey of relentless growth because the key to a life of richness, impact, and boundless possibilities lies in the quest to realize our fullest selves. The time to start is now – embrace the growth, embrace the challenge.
